IHRA Rogue’s Gallery

This “Rogues Gallery” lists those who’ve been charged with anti-Semitism for doing nothing wrong. To get your name added, email postmaster@roseburn32.plus.com So far we have:

Pam Bromley

Pam is a Rossendale Borough Councillor and was suspended from the LP in March 2017 on allegations of anti-Semitism social media posts and a variety of comments on different topics with which, it is alleged, she is bringing to LP into disrepute and damaging its electoral prospects locally.

See the charge sheet which contains 3 items out of the original however many it was.  She is not sure what has happened to the rest , which you can see here.

Pam has been waiting since June 2017 for her SAR (Subject Access Request: this request requires the recipient body to disclose all data it holds on you). The ICO told the LP again at the beginning of December to supply it, but she is still waiting. So Pam’s investigation starts without her knowing what they have got on file, yet she is asked to submit a written response by 28 January.

She argues that the accusations are absurd. She says “What I said in points 1 and 2 was the opposite of anti-Semitic. Based on conjecture, not facts, the Investigator claimed there were hidden meanings in my statement, without any proof or evidence at all. It is simply made up to suit the charges. I am getting Jewish friends who I’ve known for up to 45 years to affirm to the LP that I do not hold anti-Semitic or racist views. I’m also getting colleagues in the LP to be character witnesses.”

“The 3rd point they have raised actually criticises the Tories for their undemocratic methods – as you will see I am expressing concern that the Tories had troops on the streets of Manchester just before an election: look at what’s happened since. That does not suggest I am less interested in the human cost – as a Mancunian myself I was very bothered about it.”

“The rest of the screen prints they’ve been on about contain a whole load of nonsense from discussing the theories of Karl Marx to repeating what the Press said about, and quoting Chris Williamson. Their questions with the screen shots and my replies are in Compliance Qs and As.”

“The case has taken 9 months to get to this stage, during which time I couldn’t attend Labour Group or LP meetings or canvass. So effectively a Labour councillor not allowed to engage in anything – how does that affect the Party locally! Communications with the LP have been poor with many unanswered emails and letters. The Press knew I’d been suspended before I knew myself.  Fortunately the locals recognised it for the nonsense it was. This rather contradicts the confidentiality clause they have now slapped on my case. I do think it’s important that these cases are in the public eye.”

Jon de Rennes

A victim of Zionist Luke Akehurst (aka “Arse Ache”), who made a complaint against Jon. There was basically a thread on the FB LAW page where a member posted something along the lines of “What should we do with the Blairite right wingers esp “Arse Ache” – take them out one by one or … leave him till last to make an example?”

Someone else replied “by taken out do you mean a) take them out for dinner or a movie or b) remove them from the Labour party?” Somewhat cheekily, Jon added “c) killed. LOL” Then, a moment later he added “b) is probably the best option. LOL”,  thus making it fully apparent that his previous words were a joke. On that basis he had done nothing wrong, just made a daft joke. Nonetheless, Akehurst saw the post and made a fuss, with the result that Jon was investigated as an anti-Semite, thus wasting valuable Labour Party cash on a pointless investigation. See the letter from Labour here and Jon’s defence/ apology here. In late January 2019, the NEC announced it was closing the investigation against him and announced a formal warning; read his letter here.

Anne Gomez

– a therapist from Scotland and FB editor of “Celtic Fans Against Apartheid” is being investigated by Labour for posting an article on FB of Israeli soldiers dragging Palestinian children across the street which she simply headed “Scum”. She also posted one of Theresa May, headed “Scum” (which suggests she is fond of this word). That such conduct is now deemed to “bring the Party into disrepute” when Dame Margaret Hodge gets off scot-free for calling Jeremy Corbyn “a fucking anti-Semite” suggests questionable judgement at Labour HQ. Find Anne on FB and send her your support.

Paul Jonson

Paul was formally suspended on 31 October, after 30 years of service with Dudley council. A complaint against Paul by the “Campaign Against Antisemitism” drew directly on the IHRA “working definition” of antisemitism, citing a post by Paul promoting a lobby of local MP, Ian Austin, over civilian deaths in Gaza. In the post Paul posted “Stand with Palestine – Israel is a racist endeavour”.

However, on 19 December, Paul was informed that a complaint of alleged antisemitism against him was dismissed. It was found Paul had “no case to answer” regarding his post, nor had he brought the council into disrepute.

The complaint against him was a disgrace. Demands that Paul be sacked give the lie to assurances that the IHRA “working definition” do not jeopardise trade unionists’ right to campaign on Palestine. Individuals may have strongly held and differing views on the state of Israel but there was nothing antisemitic in anything Paul posted.

Paul took a highly principled stand just weeks before his retirement, insisting that his suspension represented an attack on basic trade union freedoms and that his name be cleared. Paul has a longstanding record as a principled local campaigner against racism and fascism and has actively opposed mobilisations by the Nazi EDL and BNP.

More at Jewish Voice for Labour website here

When asked what made the difference, Paul said “UNISON accepted the case and “inactively” stuck with it !! It was the overall campaign, very much the in excess of 800 signatures- colleagues at work who thought the allegation was both ridiculous and outrageous and our dogged lobbying of Ian Austin and confronting him at his surgery. Really going on the offensive. I wrote quite a lengthy letter to the Chief Exec and Heads of Service explaining why solidarity with Palestinians is neither antisemitic or an Employment conflict of interest. Pointing out over 40 Jewish Groups support Palestinian Human Rights and not Zionism.”

Pete Gregson

Pete has been expelled by his union, the GMB, for whom he was shop steward, for saying Israel is a racist endeavour and claiming Israel “exaggerates”  the Holocaust. He uses the Merriam-Webster definition of “exaggerates” to mean “overuses and exploits”. More info in the National newspaper here . Also his post on the “holocaust denier” slur here.

He is currently suspended by Labour- he read of his suspension a week before Labour informed him.. in the Jewish News!

In July he was sent 50 questions to answer within a week; see his response here

His legal costs are mounting over the banned banner incident; he has a solicitor and Michael Mansfield QC in place. Please contribute at www.tinyurl.com/legalihra

He is also being investigated for this post on his petition by Labour.  Find Pete on FB here and Kids not Suits here

Labour’s anti-Semitism Data Release

Read the Skawkbox post from 12/2/19

Labour’s antisemitism data release reveals genuine problem – and media exaggeration

The most obvious conclusions to draw from the figures are that:

– 99.9% of Labour members have never been accused of antisemitism
– a huge proportion of claims about ‘Labour’ behaviour doesn’t involve Labour members at all
– around a third of complaints that do involve Labour members are so unfounded that they didn’t stand up to the first level of scrutiny
– Labour’s administration under Jennie Formby has made huge inroads into the issue
– most of the old cases that took a long time to deal with were accumulated on former general secretary Iain McNicol’s watch

None of these obvious conclusions are likely to receive a mention in the so-called ‘mainstream media’.

“The AS data released on Monday night suggests there are, since April, 211 cases of Party members being investigated for AS. My suspicion is that many are, like me, being investigated and targeted because of the bogus IHRA definition – we have criticised Israel. I believe there are therefore hundreds being witch-hunted in Labour, plus more in the unions. I have the dubious honour of being witch-hunted by both” – Peter Gregson

Fake Labour accounts fueling “anti-Semitism crisis”

by Asa Winstanley The Electronic Intifada 17 January 2019 ..

From the start, reporting of the “anti-Semitism crisis” in the UK’s Labour Party has been characterized by dishonesty, exaggeration and outright fabrication. The real target of this manufactured crisis is not genuine anti-Semites, but Jeremy Corbyn and the wider Palestine solidarity movement. But now additional evidence has come to light of a disturbing trend which has been fueling the fire lit since Corbyn’s first leadership victory in September 2015.An investigation by The Electronic Intifada has documented 10 fake Twitter profiles posing as Corbyn supporters who have been posting virulent anti-Semitism. Labour ditches Jewish Labour Movement for antisemitism training

The Zionist JLM has been ditched; Labour will henceforth use Birkbeck course on Jew-hate, taught by co-chairman of Chakrabarti report, David Feldman.  See more at JvL here

What’s interesting is that David Feldman is a long-standing critic of the IHRA. See his Guardian piece of 28th Dec 2016 at Will Britain’s new definition of antisemitism help Jewish people? I’m sceptical

For those not in the know, Jon hates my “death-wish” petition at tinyurl.com/israelihra. My action in launching it has resulted in these anti-Semitism allegations against me, to which I’ve responded with these answers. I have kept the NEC updated throughout…

Subject: Re: Jon Lansman and the IHRA – a democratic deficit?

Dear Peter,

Since you persist in writing to me, I shall answer after all and you may be pleased to hear that it will mean that I will have to recuse myself from any discussion of any disputes panel case that involves you, since, in answering you, I shall have to explain that in my opinion the opinions you express are antisemitic at least in part because you clearly hold Jews as Jews responsible for the actions of Israel. You are also in my view guilty of action that is grossly prejudicial to the interests of the party. *

Before responding to the points you’ve made, however, let me apologise for ever having asked you for your vote. I do not want your vote or the vote of anyone who would repeatedly say the things you have said.

In your email to me of 28 September, you said: “I appreciate that the Labour Party felt the Jews to be an oppressed minority back in the mists of time when Zionism was deemed a cause worthy of support. But the actions of a state founded on the ethnic cleansing of 700,000 Arabs out of Palestine into the makeshift bomb-riddled townships they occupy today, denied access to energy, medicine and rights to trade has well and truly taken any kind of moral cause out of the Zionist creed. It stands for the very opposite of social justice.”

This clearly holds Jews, i.e. all Jews as Jews, responsible for the actions of Israel.

I also think that boldly declaring Israel to be a racist endeavour and challenging the NEC to expel him alongside others who signed a petition he launched may not be antisemitic but it is a deliberatively provocative act which is most certainly prejudicial to the interests of the party and I therefore urge the General Secretary to take the appropriate action against you. **

Jon sent this email not just to me, but to all 39 members of the NEC, including our Leader and his Deputy. He also sent it to our General Secretary (Jennie Formby) and our Complaints Team (Head: Sophie Goodyear). Here is the reply I immediately sent back (cc all):

Dear Jon,

I am so confused. My best friends are Jews. I went out with a rabid Zionist for months from a horribly wealthy North London family and we remain good friends to this day. My problem is with Netanyahu lovers and Nakba-deniers, not Jews, you silly chap.

You see, anti-Zionism is not the same as anti-Semitism. Just ask my pal Rabbi Beck from Stamford Hill in North London. He helped me give out flyers at Conference promoting my petition. He is part of a very special group of Orthodox Jews called the Neturei Karta. They believe Israel an aberration that should not exist. I certainly do not agree with him on that one.

So, having got that off my chest, I am so pleased that you are OK about my continuing to include you in my round-robins.

And while I have your attention, will you chip in a fiver to this GoFundMe site towards my legal costs? Have a read of what I say there, to understand what I am actually about. It’s at tinyurl.com/legalihra

Shalom

Pete Gregson

Later, I had some more thoughts. The asterisks above relate to my comments below:

* Well, the Jews who run Israel are responsible for the actions of Israel. But other Jews? Do I hold folk like Tony Greenstein and the Neturei Karta responsible too? Clearly not. Jon Lansman, maybe – but he spent years in a kibbutz there, so he’s bound to be partial. But his logic here is quite barmy. It’s like saying I’d noted Trump and his chums are white and they run the US. Therefore did I say that all whites are responsible for the actions of the US? If I did, I better shoot myself now.

** Jon is referring to my petition at tinyurl.com/israelihra and tells me that saying Israel is a racist endeavour may not be antisemitic, after all. So that means all mu CLP’s allegations against me that I am probably an anti-Semite are probably unfounded. Thanks Jon – that’s my “Get out of Jail Free” card.

But is my petition “most certainly prejudicial to the interests of the party”? I think the opposite. If we can rid ourselves of this pernicious IHRA policy that Jon brought in, that says exposing Israel’s apartheid makes you anti-Semitic, then we will have done something very much in the interests of the Party – because removing it will guarantee us freedom of speech on Israel and the power to fight racism. Its removal will strengthen Labours’ foundations, which are built on the principles of equality and social justice.

If our General Secretary is going to take appropriate action, it should be against Mr Lansman – not me.

If you are as worried as I about the way Momentum is going, please sign this petition “Democratise Momentum” which seeks to hold Lansman and Momentum’s National Co-ordinating Group to account.

Petition-signer Bronagh Wilson of Northern Ireland had this to say of Mr Lansman, after reading his email:

“..And, far from you bringing the LP into disrepute, it is he and his fellow Zionists (both Jews and non Jews) who have egregiously brought the LP into disrepute by continuing to promote the absurd lie that Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters are inveterate anti-Semites.  A lie that could be easily disproven, should they choose to do so, by the weight of the available evidence.

I always say that you don’t have to be a Jew to be a Zionist, you don’t even have to like Jews to be a Zionist, the only criteria you need to embrace that ideology is to be 1) a racist and 2) a pathological liar.  Criteria which Lansman appears to exemplify in spades.

Remember when he ludicrously wanted to stand against Jennie Formby for the GS post, stating that “he wanted to open up the contest for women” (wtf)?  Can you imagine what he would have done if he had got his hands on that position?  What would have been left of the Party, once all the “anti-Semites” had been purged, would have been sistered up with Likud in double quick time!  Strange isn’t it that it’s only those on the left of the Party who have been accused of “anti-Semitism (including of course numerous Jews)?  Surely, it cannot be possible, if anti-Semitism is really as prevalent as they claim, that no one at all from the right wing evinces the slightest hint of such racism.  Not just strange but literally incredible.

This man is not now of the left, if ever he was.  We all know that Engels was a factory owning capitalist but he was very much an exception to the rule.  It’s not, therefore, impossible, for a multi millionaire property dealer to be an earnest socialist but it is highly unlikely.  And should be regarded as suspect unless they unambiguously demonstrate that their commitment is genuine.  Lansman repeatedly fails to do so and I think his actual agenda has become more and more transparent.  If he was genuinely concerned to promote socialism then he should have the humility and good grace to step aside for the greater good.  A socialist enterprise should never be used as a vehicle for the self promotion of any individual.  And as for his view that support for JVL would alienate the “Jewish Community” (in reality he means that right wing racist portion of the “Jewish Community”), are we going to start trying to win over EDL supporters by eschewing our anti-racist principles?

This man is a menace and the sooner he is exposed, for what he really is, the better.”

AS Petition hits 500; Petitioner’s response to allegations of AS; Bronagh’s stormin’ letter

500 Labour Party members have now signed this petition telling NEC Israel is a racist endeavour.
I will know in the next few days if the Party will proceed with disciplinary proceedings against me for “anti-Semitism” and “bringing Labour into disrepute”.
See my response to the allegations here.

Here is signer Bronwyn Wilson of Northern Ireland’s letter to the Jon Lansman and the NEC supporting my complaint against Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) and Labour Friends of Israel (LFoI):

Dear Mr Lansman,

I had asked Peter Gregson to forward the email below on my behalf to all members of the NEC as I am away from home, without access to a computer, and have difficulty doing anything other than the basics on my phone.  I am, however, capable of forwarding same to the one recipient, yourself, who has rejected receipt of it on the grounds that you do not wish to personally engage with Mr Gregson at this juncture (despite him being a paid up member of Momentum).

Accordingly, I now personally submit this to you for your consideration as I believe this issue is one that requires urgent attention as it is pivotal to the success or demise of the socialist project that millions are now desperately relying upon.

Subject: Complaint against LFI and JLM

In support of Pete Gregson’s lodged complaint re the FoI and JLM, I would like to add the following: it is beyond my comprehension why the Labour Party would continue to indulge these supporters of Zionist apartheid.  Zionism is an inherently racist (including anti-Semitic racist) ideology, the principal aim of which is to enable the colonisation of a land at the grave expense of its indigenous population.  Anti-Semitism is abhorrent, as all racism is abhorrent. The fact that Jews were subject to the worst crime in history (in a highly competitive field for that “honour”) in no way excuses some Jews from now committing the appalling crimes which continue to be inflicted on the Palestinians. Where is the sense in continuing to indulge these bad faith hypocrites who are determined to undermine everything that the LP now stands, and should stand, for?  LFI should be, and must become, an oxymoron.  The plight of the Palestinians is becoming increasingly desperate.  The prisoners in Gaza, deprived of the essentials of life, routinely and regularly massacred, who can neither sustain life within nor leave their prison, what is going to become of them? It can only be a matter of time before the most shameful catastrophe engulfs them.  And we as a supposedly democratic socialist party should be friends with their tormentors?  Where is your sense of morality, where is your sense of socialist solidarity with the oppressed everywhere? For goodness sake, open your eyes and minds and have a bit of wit.  Not only is the Zionist position morally repugnant but manifestly and grossly hypocritical to boot.  What would be the position of the LFI and JLM were it the Jews of Palestine who were corralled in the Gaza hellhole? Think on, Zionists care about nobody and nothing apart from effecting their ethno supremacist project.  Not even for fellow Jews who dissent from any connection with their pernicious goals.  By far the worst anti-Semitism I have witnessed over recent years has been that directed towards those Jews who refuse to collude with this obscenity (Michael Rosen deserves a medal for the vile abuse he has endured in fighting against this scourge). I truly despair at this rank cowardice and idiocy from the leadership which has allowed this Orwellian inversion of the truth to become established wisdom: that Jeremy Corbyn has encouraged and supported endemic anti-Semitism to thrive in the Party.  Don’t be ridiculous.  If this boil is not lanced now (as it should have been at the very beginning of this farrago of nonsense), you are going to enable these utterly unprincipled fifth columnists to destroy any hope of fulfilling the societal transformation that so many of us desperately need. So much for the adoption of the full IHRA definition and examples putting this issue to bed.  Predictably, and as widely predicted, this has just fired the starting gun on a doubling down of this pernicious nonsense.  I have no wish to be suspended or expelled from the Party but, believe me, that would be a very small price to pay for refusing to be cowed into silence regarding the truth of the Palestinians’ experience.  The Labour Party can never be a vehicle for progressive change if it cowers before the likes of the racist bullies who infest the LFI and JLM.  Although it may be the case that there are those amongst its members who can be persuaded to reconsider their allegiances, the time to resolve their cognitive dissonance is now before they are permanently tainted by their connection with these fundamentally racist organisations.

I urge you to reconsider this complaint at http://www.kidsnotsuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Complaint-Against-JLM-and-LFoI.pdf because of the ongoing danger the JLM and the LFoI represents to the Party.

Yours

Bronagh Wilson (Northern Ireland CLP)

Police ban Scots IHRA petition campaigner from showing “anti-Semite” Banner outside Labour Conference

Action Against The Police

Update 8th July 2019: My solicitor wrote me with correspondence from Merseyside Police denying liability and enclosing a number of documents in support of their denial. He said “Most of the reasons given by the Officers in their Defence to your complaint were indeed unsustainable.  The banners/flyers do not amount to any Public Order Offence. Unfortunately, neither Article 10 nor Article 11 ECHR confer an over-riding right to expression, association or assembly on private land and in light of the Notices (which we have now seen for the first time) from ACC Liverpool Group and Kings Waterfront Estates Limited, both dated 13 September 2018, forbidding any protest or demonstration on their land it appears we must regrettably conclude that the Police did indeed have the power to tell you to stop your protest and move you along. I understand that you will feel aggrieved to have been singled out in a situation where other groups were displaying banners and leafleting and were not being moved on by the Police, but that fact in itself would not form the basis of a successful civil claim. I think it is most likely, in light of the Notices of 13 September, that the Court would conclude that the Police were entitled to direct you to protest in the designated area ‘off site’ and not to affix your banner to any part of the private land. I must regretfully advise that you now discontinue this claim. ”

So I lost the court action because the police presented this:

It gives them the right to stop people displaying banners at Labour Conference because the pavement outside the Conference Centre is private land. So I lost the case.

My lawyer said “Hence a Court is most likely to conclude that the Police were entitled, pursuant to the landowner’s direction, to instruct you to protest or otherwise express your views in the designated area or not at all on private land. That remains the case even if you were singled out and others (such as the Marxist) were not.” Well, that’s £1,000 well spent!

____________________________________________

Update – April, 2019: Some of you may recall that last year at Labour Conference, Merseyside Police stopped me from displaying my cartoon banner showing Netanyahu calling Corbyn an anti-Semite. I wrote the story up here. Before I could progress a claim against the cops for breaking the law, I had to exhaust their complaints process, which took five months. I have now contracted with DPP Law to pursue a claim for compensation against the police, citing their breach of Article 9, 10 and 11 of the European Convention of Human Rights. The rozzers are now lying through their teeth to escape justice, but I have four witnesses.

Any compensation I gain I shall use to pay legal fees to challenge the IHRA definition in the courts, help pay ET and litigation fees for myself and others, etc. My solicitor reckons I have good prospects of success. You can read the compensation claim letter to the police of 5th April 2019 from him here. They have 90 days to respond.

_________________________________________________

5th September 2018: Merseyside Police were so angry with campaigner Pete Gregson displaying his Latuff cartoon banner at Labour’s 2018 Conference that they almost arrested him. However, they were not bothered about all the other banners on display. Here is the image Pete used on his banner, at some 2 x 2 metres:

Giving out Flyers at Labour Conference: Pete Gregson, a Stamford Hill rabbi, Jack Thomas, Rabbi Beck, Chris Birchall.

Israeli soldiers stopped Muslim speaker Issa Amro from flying to Conference to address a Fringe Meeting about how best to secure peace in the Middle East. The event is still on this Tuesday night, since his Jewish colleague, Miko Peled, has been able to get out of Israel for this. The Stamford Hill Rabbis opposed to the IHRA are coming too

Mr Gregson, safe at home in Edinburgh after his day at the Labour Conference in Liverpool

Mondoweiss, in Detroit, USA, who commissioned the cartoon from Latuff, say it can be reproduced as necessary; no copywright permission required (they are on 240-516-6636 or email here)

UPDATE

On 15th March 2019, DPP Law agreed to take on Pete’s case against the Merseyside Police with a civil action against Merseyside Police for breach of the Human Rights Act (specifically Article 10 ECHR). His lawyer believes he has good prospects of success with his claim. Pete has exhausted the internal police complaints procedures, whith the police denying throughout that they acted improperly in any way. Pete hopes to use any payout he can secure from the police to supplement other legal costs he incurs; the fundraising website at www.tinyurl.com/legalihra has not yielded a great deal thus far. There is a 3-month period now during which Merseyside Police has in which to respond to the threat of court action. Thus it will be mid-June before we can issue them with a summons…
